Question:
I am very upset. My dentist tells me that I have periodontal problems and he doesn't think I will be able to keep my teeth much longer. Is there anything that I can do?
Answer: If you want to save your teeth, nutrition and proper dental hygiene are the keys. In adults, the major cause of tooth loss is periodontal disease - an inclusive term used to describe an inflammatory condition of the gums (gingiva) and/or the ligament that supports the tooth (the periodontal ligament or periodontium). Periodontal disease usually refers to a disease process that typically progresses from inflammation of the gums (gingivitis) to inflammation of the periodontal ligament (periodontitis).
Although dental hygiene is of great importance in treating and preventing periodontal disease, in many cases it is not enough. In order for periodontal disease to be halted or prevented it requires a greater focus on nutritionally supporting the tissues of the gums, periodontium, and immune system. To a very large extent, the nutritional status of the individual determines whether or not they will be able to keep their teeth throughout their lifetime. Key nutrients to supplement are: Vitamin C: 500-1,500 mg daily; Zinc: 30 mg daily; Calcium: 800-1,200 mg daily; Magnesium: 400-600 mg daily; and. Selenium: 200-400 mcg daily
In addition to these nutrients, I would also recommend supplementing with Coenzyme Q10 (150-300 mg daily) and grape seed extract (150-300 mg daily). I have seen patients experience tremendous benefit with these recommendations.
