Question:
What is your opinion on ephedrine-based herbal formulas for weight loss?
Answer: Use of herbal formulas containing ephedrine (from Ephedra sinica, also known as ma huang) and natural sources of caffeine such as the cola nut or the herb guarana is somewhat controversial. These substances act by stimulating the nervous system, which in turn promotes an increase in metabolism and the burning of fat. In my opinion, these products can be quite useful as part of a well-designed overall weight reduction program.
There are some caveats: do not exceed recommended amounts; with these products, taking more is not necessarily better; look for products standardized for ephedrine and caffeine content; and do not exceed a daily dose of 30 mg ephedrine and 100 mg caffeine. Higher doses are more likely to cause nervousness, irritability, insomnia, and increased blood pressure and/or heart rate.
The FDA advisory review panel on nonprescription drugs recommended that ephedrine not be taken by patients who have heart disease, high blood pressure, thyroid disease, diabetes, or difficulty in urination due to enlargement of the prostate. In addition, ephedrine should not be used to treat patients who are taking blood pressure medicines or antidepressants.
