Question:
I suffer from canker sores. It seems when one finally heals another one pops up somewhere else in my mouth. Can you help?
Answer: Yes. Here are three things to try. First, since sensitivity to gluten (a protein found in grains) is the primary cause of recurrent canker sores. Withdrawing gluten from the diet results in complete remission of recurrent canker sores in many. Next, take a high potency multiple vitamin and mineral formula that supplies adequate levels of B vitamins (at 10 times the RDA). Nutrient deficiency, particularly of B vitamins, is another common cause of recurrent canker sores is nutritional deficiency. Correction of an underlying nutrient deficiency will bring complete resolution.
Finally, a special licorice extract known as DGL (short for deglycyrrhizinated licorice) is very effective in promoting healing of recurrent canker sores. In one study, 15 of 20 (75%) people with canker sores experienced 50-75% improvement within 1 day, followed by complete healing of the ulcers by the third day. DGL is available in 380 mg chewable tablets. The typical dosage recommendation is two tablets three times daily about 20 minutes before meals.
In summary, although numerous factors can lead to recurrent canker sores considerable evidence suggests that the underlying problem may be a gluten sensitivity and/or food allergy. In addition, nutrient deficiencies need to be corrected. DGL can be used to help heal the ulcers.
